Clinical
Notes
In
Traditional Chinese Medicine, Yang corresponds symbolically to fire.
In the body, Yang refers to the bodyís heat source, which is responsible
for the intensity of internal fluctuations. When the body temperature
diminishes, the vital functions slow down. The Chinese call this
"vital heat" or "the fire of life". The western notion of "basic
metabolic rate" that is, the quantity of heat produced per hour
and per square meter of body surface, while resting and on an empty
stomach is essentially comparable to the effect of Yang as described
by the Chinese.
In
the body, Yang is represented by the actions of heating, transforming,
transporting, retaining, and protecting. In the case of Yang Xu
these actions will be compromised depending on the severity of the
condition.
In
general, Yang deficiency reduces the vigor of vital energy (Qi),
leading to a loss of strength and a feeling of fatigue.
Ingredients
Chuan
Bei Mu:Dang
Shen, Bu Gu Zhi, Tu Si Zi, Wu Wei Zi.
Jie
Geng:Gou Qi Zi, Huang Qi, Xu Duan, Rou Cong Rong.
Analysis
of the Formula
The
formula contains over 10 herbs which are extremely complicated in
their interactions. It is beyond the scope of this information sheet
to detail the exact interaction of these ingredients. The main ingredients,
however, are listed above. Chuan Bei Mu is classified under herbs
that cool and transform hot phlegm. It has the properties of being
bitter and cold, and it is noted for entering the Lung, Triple Burner,
Stomach, and Liver channels. Jie Geng is listed in the category
of warm herbs that transform cold phlegm. It is bitter, acrid, and
neutral, and it enters the Lung and Stomach channels. In combination,
Bei Mu and Jie Geng have a distinct effect different from their
traditional use. In combination they have a direct effect on the
states of extreme depletion called "Xu Xun" and "Xu Lao". Together,
Bei Mu and Jie Geng are noted for decreasing any build-up of phlegm
due to a Yang Xu condition and their ability to assist the lungs,
decrease blood sugar, and lipids.
In
total, the combination of the ingredients results in the conservation
of the "fire of life" which is the Yang part of our stock of vitality.
Use
In
most Yang Xu conditions, there should be noticeable effect in two
weeks. If no changes have occurred in two weeks and the case is
definitely one of Yang Xu, the number of bags should be increased
to two per day and in extreme cases up to three per day.
