Joint
and Tendon Problems in Traditional Chinese Medicine
Q. Why are there
two arthritis products?
A. Because there
are two types of arthritis according to Chinese
teaching.
Equine
Moving Comfort T-24 - mend bones, tendons, and muscles
Equine
Moving Comfort T-29 - to help treat deficiency of liver and
kidneys, bone growths
Equine
Moving Comfort T-24
Action
To help reduce inflammation,
pain, and immobility of arthritis by stimulating the bodyís own
powers of regeneration and repair. They are useful in assisting
to mend bones, tendons, and muscles after racing injuries.
A formula to assist
in gentle healing and relief of pain caused by common muscle and
tendon problems.
Indications
In Traditional Chinese
Medicine (TCM), this formula is used to help treat the syndrome
called Feng Shi Bing or Wind, Cold and Dampness affecting the muscles
and tendons. Symptoms may appear as stiffness, joint swelling, or
pain during movement as a result of inflamed or swollen and sore
tendons.
Treatment
Can be used to help
treat disorders such as: rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, tendonitis,
bursitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, rheumatic neuritis, chronic low
back pain, and non disc-related sciatica.
Clinical Notes
Rheumatism consists
of muscle and joint pain, stiffness and cramping and is seen in
Chinese Medicine as a combination of three agents affecting the
body. These three agents are labeled as Wind, Cold and Dampness.
The presentation of the different kinds of symptoms in rheumatic
conditions are reflected in the degrees to which each of these three
factors predominate in the body.
For example, if a
horse has more Wind than Dampness the horse will experience pains
that are roving (moving from place to place) and erratic. If Dampness
predominates, the pain characteristics of the symptoms will
include swelling in the joints. With Cold, the pains will be sharp
and quite localized.
In general, Wind,
Cold, and Dampness affect the skin and muscles in the early stages
and can subsequently progress deeper to affect the tendons and articulations.
The condition can
weaken the circulation of Qi and Blood, hence affecting the organs
of the body. Often, horses with this condition are affected by the
environmental weather conditions depending on the predominating
factor, i.e. Wind, Cold or Dampness.

Additional Notes
The longer the horse
has suffered from symptoms the longer it will take for the herbal
formulas to work. In most cases there will be improvement within
the first three weeks. In TCM, it is said that one should use a
month of formulas for every year the disease or problem has been
present. In most older horses, once the pathogenic symptoms are
gone, it is well advised to continue as a preventative measure to
give on a regular basis the Chinese formula such as one week of
dosage every month or one dosage every second or third day.
Equine
Moving Comfort T-29
Action
A deeper, slower acting
formula for older animals with arthritis, dysplasia, and common
problems of limited joint function and movement. It helps soften
calcifications and remove pain while allowing natural movement to
wear away irritating bony growths.
Indications
In TCM, this formula
is used to help treat a deficiency of Qi and Xue (Blood) and joint
pain (all joints
including vertebrae) due to deficiency of liver and kidneys, bone
growths (osteophytes).
Treatment
Used to assist treating
defined disorders such as: bone hyperplasia (enlargement of an organ
or tissue due
to an increase in the number of its constituent cells. The new cells
are normal unlike those
of a tumor), spondylitis (inflammation of the joints between the
vertebrae in the spine usually
caused by a rheumatic disorder such as rheumatoid arthritis) associated
with bone hyperplasia,
slipped or dislocated intervertebral disc, sciatica due to protruding
disc, or osteoporosis.
Clinical Notes
In TCM, the kidneys
rule the bones and the liver rules the tendons.
The cause of joint
ache and pain is a result of either a deficiency of Qi and blood
affecting the kidneys
and liver or an over exertion with exposure to Wind, Cold and Dampness.
In the first case
of Qi and blood deficiency, this occurs usually after middle age
when the liver blood and kidneys
Jing (or inherited energies), tend to be more depleted.
When this is the case
the tendons and bones are affected and joint pain is experienced
especially with over
exertion and exposure to Wind, Cold and Dampness.
In the second case,
joint pain may occur without an initial deficiency of Qi and blood.
It may occur
with constant over exertion of joints to the point of depleting
Qi and blood.
This in turn will
lead to damage in the tendons and bones which will reflect back
on the kidneys and
liver giving rise to symptoms in those areas. In all cases, there
is joint pain (aching and dull) made
worse with exertion, and it can be worse in the morning. There may
be joint dysfunction and
limitation.
