Clinical
Notes
"Qi"
(energy) and blood congestion is a condition of circulatory deficiency
with a tendency to form various internal accumulations and obstructions.
These can include phenomena as diverse as blood clots, food stagnation
in the gastro-intestinal system, or the formation of various types
of tumor, benign or malignant. Energy and Qi circulation is particularly
vulnerable to disturbances in emotional balance. Emotional disorders
such as anxiety, or repressed anger are principle factors in stagnation.
The
estrus cycle has a very important effect on the circulation of Qi
and blood. According to Chinese medicine, the accumulation of blood
in the mare uterus is a natural process. It is the quantity of blood
accumulated in this way which determines the mareís fertility. This
accumulation of blood, in fact, has the function of feeding the
embryo in the event of pregnancy.
On
the other hand, the accumulation of blood creates the conditions
for general circulatory imbalance. This imbalance is particularly
common before the estrus cycle: it may give rise to nervousness
and irritability. The periodic expulsion of menstrual blood can
only take place harmoniously as long as Qi flows smoothly enough
to push the blood out of the body. Excessive emotional tensions
inhibit the smooth flow of Qi and blood throughout the body. Emotional
states characterized by frustration or anxiety will consequently
disturb the regularity of the estrus cycle. Serious congestion may
then occur.

Use
Although
this formula works in all cases of Yu (stagnation) of Qi and blood,
clinicians have found that Red is very effective in regulating and
normalizing the estrus cycle. More importantly, it can be used over
a longer period of time, three to six weeks, to harmonize the estrus
cycle. For cases of stagnation improvements should be noticed within
two weeks. If no changes have occurred in two weeks and the case
is definitely one of Yu (stagnation), Qi, and blood, the number
of bags should be increased to two per day.
Caution
Red
is a safe formula that will not have any adverse effects. It is
a formula that is to be used in chronic deficient conditions and
for prevention. With this in mind, Red is not recommended when the
horse is suffering from an externally contracted condition such
as a cold or flu.
