Clinical
Notes
Yin
corresponds symbolically to water. It is the opposite of Yang. From
the functional point of view, Yin refers to that which is cooling,
nourishing, resting, and lubricating. Yin deficiency may express
itself through signs of hyperactivity. The heart beat, body temperature,
blood pressure, etc., are all parameters held in balance between
two tendencies: excess (Shi) and deficiency (Xu).
Concretely,
Yin relates mostly to the physical substance of which a body is
made and particularly the water and fluids. Thus, Yin corresponds
both to the internal liquids (blood, lymph, plasma, synovia, etc.)
and to the external secretions (saliva, sweat, tears, nasal mucus,
sperm, or vaginal lubricant, etc.) which all share a common liquid
character.
The
aging process not only involves a degradation of Yang character
vital energy, but also of the physical quality of the tissues which
become progressively dehydrated. This gradual dehydration is correspondent
to the depletion of Yin. For Yang-type constitutions the priority
in regenerating vitality is the conservation of the Yin aspect.

Analysis
of the Formula
The
main ingredients are listed above. The two main ingredients are
Du Zhong and Shu DI Huang. Du Zhong has the properties of being
sweet, slightly acrid, and warm. The channels it enters are the
liver and kidney. The traditional functions and clinical use indicate
that Du Zhong is used to tonify liver and kidneys, and strengthens
tendons and bones. It aids in the smooth movement of Qi and blood
and it promotes circulation. Although traditionally this herb is
not used in deficient Yin conditions, it can with the appropriate
combination be used for this purpose. The second main ingredient,
Shu DI Huang, has the properties of being sweet, slightly warm,
and the channels that it enters are the liver, kidney, and heart.
The main action of Shu DI Huang is to tonify blood and it is used
for deficient blood patterns and it is recognized for its ability
to nourish the Yin.
Use
Experience
has shown that the regeneration of the Yin part of vitality generally
takes longer than that of the Yang part. Yin deficiency is a condition
which furthers the incidence of diabetes and hypertension. The longer
the horse has suffered from the symptoms, the longer it will take
for the herbal formula to work. In most cases, there will be an
improvement within the first two weeks. If no changes have occurred
in two weeks and the case is definitely one of Yin XU, the number
of bags should be increased to two per day.
Caution
Silver
is a safe formula that will not have any adverse effects. It is
a formula that is to be used in chronic deficient conditions and
for prevention. With this in mind, Silver is not recommended when
the horse is suffering from an externally contracted condition such
as a cold or flu.
